As AILA reported on March 5, 2025: “USCIS issued a 60-day notice on a proposed new collection of information to collect social media identifiers (“handles”) and associated social media platform names from applicants to enable and help inform identity verification, national security and public safety screening, vetting, and related inspections. Comments are due by 5/5/25. (90 FR 11324, 3/5/25).” This action comes after the Trump Administration’s executive order 14161, requiring, in part, rigorous and uniform vetting processes of inadmissibility and denial grounds for applications and petitions submitted to USCIS. This is arguably a more hostile approach to reviewing applications and petitions from USCIS and makes it more important for foreign nationals to review their social media presence to ensure it is consistent with their applications and petitions (as should always be the case). We will continue to monitor this issue, specifically after May 5, to determine what policy guidance will be issued, if any, and which forms may update their requests to be consistent with this rule.
